Celia Ste Croix | Whitecourt Edmonton and Strathcona County have hired 13 HSE firefighters in the last two years. Whitecourt Fire Department deputy fire chief Aaron Floyd worked at HSE before moving to the municipal fire department. Pastoor said municipal departments want to see firefighters with more life experience than young fire school graduates sometimes have. He said that at HSE, on top of everything else, firefighters learn truck maintenance and PR skills with customers, which can translate into communicating with individuals in emergency situations. Industrial firefighting is not a typical job, Pastoor said. “It’s different than sitting behind a computer. It’s a lot of manual labour and then waiting for something to happen, so you always have to be ready. You get a municipal fire truck, it rolls out to a house. They still have to set up to a fire hydrant, get their hoses out, get all their equipment ready but ours has to be out and ready already. If something happens you are in the middle of the issue, not outside assessing it.” HSE also trains the municipal firefighters and RCMP officers in First Aid, CPR, fall protection and H2S Alive, which teaches about how to respond to hydrogen sulfide.
